American Roulette rules are similar to European Roulette rules so American Roulette strategy is also similar. There is one big difference between the two though and that difference means that the American Roulette odds always give the casino, house or internet site the edge.
The reason that the American Roulette odds are worse for the player is that there are is an extra "0" slot in the roulette wheel. On a European Roulette wheel there is one slot for "0", in the American version there's one "0" slot and another "00" slot. This one small difference changes the house odds from 2.7% to 5.2% so the American Roulette odds for the house are doubled.
If you're going to use a roulette strategy when you play the game it's impoartant to take into account this extra "00" when you come up with your American Roulette strategy.
If you walk into a casino anywhere in the world it's very unusual to see both European and American Roulette in the same building. The reason for this is pretty simple from the casino's point of view; If a casino has chosen an American Roulette wheel it's because they want the better American Roulette odds for the house. It's not in their interest to give players a choice between playing a roulette game that's less likely to payout and a game that's more likely to.
The addition of this extra "00" pocket not only affects the American roulette odds it also affects the actual roulette table layout because there is an extra space for players to bet on "00".
The other difference is that in European Roulette you can bet on what are known as call bets. Call bets are when a player announces a certain type of bet to the dealer and then the dealer proceeds to place the chips in that area. Call bets are similar to spread bets in that they cover a certain range of numbers on the roulette table layout.
You can learn more about European Roulette call bets on our European Roulette page.
Remember that because call bets only exist in European roulette you can't use them as part of your American Roulette strategy. Also don't forget the American Roulette odds are affected by that extra "00" on the roulette wheel.
